Difference between XML and HTML

The difference XML and HTML are markup languages ​​that are defined for different purposes and have some differences. The previous difference is that in XML there are provisions for defining new elements while HTML does not provide a specification for defining new elements and using predefined tags. XML can be used to build a markup language whereas HTML itself is a markup language.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is designed to facilitate web-based document transfer. In contrast, XML was developed to provide interoperability with SGML and HTML and ease of implementation.

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a language that allows the user to define a data representation or data structure in which a value is assigned to each field in the structure. IBM compiled it as GML (Generalized Markup Language) in the 1960s. When the IBM GML was adopted by ISO, it was named SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) and it was the basis for a complex documentation system. The XML language provides a platform for defining markup elements and generating a customized markup language. In XML to create a language or elements, one must follow some rules defined in XML. XML documents include data as strings and text surrounded by text markup. The basic units in XML are known as elements.

XML is a well-established and valid markup language. Here a well-formed specifies that the XML parser cannot pass code if it is filled with syntax, punctuation, grammar errors. Moreover, it is only valid until it is well formed and valid means that the element structure and markup must match a standard set of rules.

XML documents involve two parts – prologue and body. The prologue part of XML consists of administrative metadata such as XML declarations, optional processing instructions, Document type declarations and comments. The body part is partitioned into two parts – structural and content (Present in plain text).

HTML definition

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a markup language for building web pages. The markup command used in web-based content signifies the document structure and layout to the browser. The browser simply reads a document with HTML markup in it and renders it on the screen by inspecting the HTML elements placed in the document. HTML documents are considered text files that hold information that needs to be published.

Disadvantages of Using XML

Key differences between XML and HTML

  3. When it comes to types the HTML language is case-sensitive. In contrast, XML is case-sensitive.
  4. HTML was designed with an emphasis on data presentation features. In contrast, XML is data specific in which data storage and transfer is a major concern.
  5. XML doesn’t allow any errors if there are some errors in the code that can’t be parsed. In contrast, in HTML minor errors can be ignored.
  6. White spaces in XML are used for special uses because XML considers every single character. In contrast, HTML can ignore whitespace.
  7. Tags in XML must be closed, whereas in HTML open tags can also function properly.
  8. Nested in XML must be done properly, this has great importance in XML syntax. In contrast, HTML doesn’t really care about nesting.

There are several examples of implementing XML in programming that I’ve come across:
